Icons

During my residency at Aegean Center for Fine Arts, I studied the Cretan school of Orthodox iconography which traces it’s origins to the 1st century BC with Fayum mummy portraits. I use these techniques to create traditional and non-traditional icons. I cut and prepare the board with many layers of gesso, sand the it to a satin smooth surface, transfer my drawing, add the gold leaf, and carefully layer egg tempera to create a luminous quality. This repetitive process elicits a meditative state.
